메타볼리즘은 1960년 일본에서 개최된 『세계디자인회의』를 계기로 탄생되었다. 해상도시와 탑상도시를 통하여 주장한 기꾸다께의 『교환(交換)의 이론』이 강력히 대두되었다. 현대의 도시는 끊임없이 신진대사를 한다. 가와조에, 쿠로카와, 기꾸다께 3인이 모여서 찾아낸 말이 메타볼리즘(Metabolism)이다. 『군조형』에 대한 사상을 가지고 있던 오다까 다사또와 마끼 후미히꼬가 합세하여 메타볼리즘이 탄생하였다. 메타볼리즘은 생물학적인 의미이외에도 변화를 계속하는 건축, 성장해 나가는 사회라는 의미가 중첩되어 있다. 메타볼리즘 그룹의 건축이미지는 차례로 부분을 갱신해 나가면서 변화에 대응한다는 것. 이러한 이미지는 사회의 경제성장에 부응하는 건축의 변화를 전제로 하는 것이다. 1960년 발표된 메타볼리즘의 선언문 일부 : 메타볼리즘이라는 것은 장차 다가올 사회의 모양을 구체적으로 제안하는 그룹의 명칭이다. 역사의 신진대사를 자연적으로 받아들이는 것이 아니고 적극적으로 촉진하려고 한다. 기꾸다께의 『탑상도시』에서의 Movable House와 쿠로카와의 캡슐주택, 기꾸다께의 『해상도시』의 작업이 있었고, 실현된 작품으로는 쿠로카와의 Expo'70의 타까라 파빌리온, 기꾸다께의 도오고오엔 호텔, 오끼나와의 Aquapolis 등이다. 찰스 젠크스는 『근대건축운동』이라는 저서에서 그가 분류한 6가지의 전통중에서 논리적인 전통으로 메타볼리즘 운동을 분류하면서 메타볼리즘 운동이 과학적인 논리의 바탕에 근거를 하고 있음을 밝히고 있다.

쿠로카와 건축은 기계중심주의, 유럽중심주의의 건축에 반발, 1959년에 기계시대는 생명의 시대로 이동하고 있다. 기계는 완전히 기능적이고 이성의 원리에 입각해서 만들어지기 위해 모든 불필요한 불명확성을 제거하는데 반해 생명은 폐기물,무한성,유희 등을 포함한다. 그것은 흐르는(flowing)구조이고 영원히 동적 평형을 만들어낸다. 세계의 많은 다른 문화가 상호문화의 시대에 공생을 하며 존재한다. 생명의 시대에 아름다움의 기준이 있다면, 동적인 규현일 것이다. 항상 변화하고, 안정된 불안정의 체계처럼 항상 균형을 유지하고 이것은 혼란이라기 보다는 새로운 질서의 상징으로 여겨진다. 전이지역, 불확실성, 메타몰포시스, 공생의 철학 같은 개념의 추구 메타볼리즘의 건축 ; 메타볼리즘은 미래지향적이고, high-tech의 건축운동으로 여겨져 왔는데, 이것은 표면적이고 부분적인 인식이다. 쿠로카와 기쇼가 말하는 메타볼리즘은 1.생명과 생명형상에 대한 강조를 통한 기계시대에 대한 도전 2.역사적 전통, 지역적 취향, 장소의 성격등과 같이 근대건축에서 무시되어 왔던 요소들의 부활 3.전체에 대한 강조뿐 아니라 부분이나 하부시스템, 그리고 하부문화의 존재와 자치에도 중요성을 부여하기 4.문화적 정체성과 지역적 특징이 시각적으로 표현될 필요는 없다. 전통은 보이지 않는 형태인 철학, 생활양식, 미학적 암호를 통해서 의미를 가질 수 있다. 가장 진보된 기술과 재료를 통해서 지역 표현의 가능성이 열려져 있다. 5.메타볼리즘의 건축은 임시적인(temporariness)건축이다. 동적인 평형은 서구의 보편적이고 영원한 심미학적 개념의 대안물이다. 6.마치 살아 있는 생명조직과 같이 건축과 도시를 시간과 공간에 열려 있는 시스템으로 여긴다. 7.통시적, 과거와 현재 그리고 미래의 공생 ; 동시적, 다른 문화의 공생 8.신성한 점이적인 지대, 불명확성, 무한성, 이러한 것이 생명체의 특별한 특징이다. 9.메타볼리즘의 건축은 정보시대의 건축이다. 보이지 않는 정보의 기술, 생명과학, 생물과학은 건축적 표현을 만들어 낸다. 10.관계성을 존재 그 자체보다 더 가치 있게 생각을 한다. = 메타볼리즘의 건축은 적극적으로 현대사회와 근대건축의 훌륭한 성취를 받아들이고 동화시키고 영속시킨다. 이말은 현대의 기술과 재료를 적극적으로 이용하여 문화적인 정체성을 표현하는 방법을 찾는다는 의미이다. 메타볼리즘의 철학은 통시성(diachronicity; 다른 시간대의 공생)과 동시성(synchronicity;생명체가 살아 있는 동안의 생명체의 변화와 그 과정)의 두 가지 원칙에 근거한다. 메타볼리즘 운동의 첫 번째 목표는 건축과 도시계획에 이러한 재생산의 과정을 소개하는 것이고, 그것은 건축의 작품이 그것이 일단 완성이 되었다고 해서 굳어버리는 것이 아니라 과거로부터 현재로, 현재로부터 미래로의 전개발전을 과정으로서 이해를 하는 것이다. 메타볼리즘 철학은 인간과 기술사이의 서구적 반대개념을 극복하고 인간과 기계가 공생하면서 살 수 있다는 가정에서 출발한다. 도시바 IHI파빌리온은 이것의 구체적인 예이다. 메타볼리즘의 두 번째 원리는 공간의 공시성이다. 보편적 상징은 사라지고, 서로 다른 문화의 문맥을 적용하여 건축을 장초할 수 있는 자유가 있다.국제주의에서 상호문화주의(Intercultural)로 여긴다. 메타몰포시스(Metamorphosis) ; 1960년대 메타볼리즘과 열려진 구조의 개념에 관여, 1970년대 매개적 공간과 불명확성이라는 메타몰포시스에 관여, 1980년대 공생, 1990년대에 이러한 개념들이 추구하고 발전시켜야할 개념이라 여김. 건축은 시대정신의 표현이기 때문에 관심사가 변화, 쿠로카와 작품에 일관된 두가지 특이점, 첫째, 유기적인 생명체와 생명 시스템을 시대정신으로 표현하려 함, 둘째, 건축과 도시는 항상 변화하고, 그 구조는 열려 있으며, 건축과 자연사이의 관계는 가치 있다, 중간매계 공간이라는 것은 서로 다른 공간사이의 매개공간으로서 서구의 이분법과 이항론적 반대주의가 배제한 애매모호성과 불안정성을 소개하고 있다. 작은공원과 거리를 생활공간의 연장으로 쓰는 것은 반공적 공간의 예이다. 심바이오시스(Symbiosis) 철학 ; 메타볼리즘은 주로 불교의 개념이고 동양적이다. 그것의 기본바탕은 공생의 철학이다.

The program called for Edge Architects to renovate the 700 square meter of floor area in the Atrium space of the Hong Kong Arts Centre. To redefine this four story leftover space, consisting of of various foyers with access to the different performance spaces, the architects inserted a flexible program that achieved a crossover between bar(leisure), retail facilities(shopping) and exhibition(art) without disturbing the integrity of the multi-level space.

The first layer of the renovation was to transform the entire internal wall into a continuous skin covered with metallic paint.

A pattern of horizontal metal channels is attached on top of the wall to connect the different parts of the foyer together as well as providing a system to display artwork and to install different accessories such as table top, brochures holders.
To further enhance full flexibility, a series of mobile units are placed throughout the different floors to accommodate the different functional requirements.

A light box, on the existing stair balustrade, forms a continuous spiral of white light that connect the different functions.
The light box balustrade embraces the existing handrails and becomes a gigantic spiral directory for easy orientation to the performance spaces.

The entrances become floating planes made of horizontal aluminium louvres with a plane of yellow light separating it from the wall.
Another layer of suspended wires support light fixtures that highlight the existing waffle structure.

A layer of movable cantilever target lights located at high level of the wall channels forms another datum specially dedicated to illumination of artworks during exhibitions.

The passageway from the ground floor to the fourth floor becomes a space for intensified events to take place.
The glossy epoxy floor at all levels give a neutral touch to the Atrium; making the information sandwiched between the channel wall and the light box stand out

The structure of the internal Sonotube system consists of triangular trusses of paper tubes resting on a colonnade of 35 feet tall paper tube columns. The aluminium roof trusses and tensile roof fabric are engineered and fabricated to be easily deconstructed, stored and shipped to future locations.

The wide wood-plank walkways are bordered on either side by bays filled with river rock. The unframed photos, printed on cream colored handmade Japanese paper, are hung from thin cables and suspension rods, installed between the paper columns.

The new Station Center in Hamburg -Altona will be build on a junction of public and private traffic in various levels. The building complex consisting of the train station, a shopping centre, offices and supporting facilities.
The building, knotted into the town structure both under and above ground becomes the central meeting point frequented from all sides, connecting the public spaces and extending them.

The 10 meters deep façade along “Paul Nevermann Platz” creates an impression of transparency and depth. This relates to the terminus behind it and functions as a permeable zone in front of a future quarter build on the existing rails.
The permeable structure of the new complex functions as a screen for the multiplicity of the surrounding and reflects its inner life.
The spatial and functional transition between inside and outside is linearly flowing .
The linear urban green of the “Platz der Republik” in the north-south direction is continued as a hanging garden inside of the building.
A multi-layer space is created through superposition of STRUCTURE with URBAN SPACE - FUNCTION - CONSTRUCTION - MOVEMENT - GREEN - PICTURES - INFORMATION
The transparency between the different layers makes this superposition visible to the outside
